6 Sustainable Tea Hacks for Earth Day

Earth day... We love the earth, but we know that humans aren't always doing things that are the best for it. It is daunting and overwhelming even thinking of how we can try and fix all the pollution in the world.  So we like to take the "every small thing adds up to big things" approach.  Small changes over time can add up to big results!

Here are 6 things that you can do today that will add up to big results over time!

  1. Buy loose leaf tea: Loose leaf tea typically generates less waste compared to tea bags, which often contain plastic and are individually packaged. Invest in a reusable infuser or strainer to brew loose leaf tea.

  2. Use biodegradable tea bags: If you really must use tea bags, opt for biodegradable or compostable tea bags.

  3. Conserve energy: Boil only the amount of water you need for your tea to avoid wasting energy. Use energy-efficient appliances like electric kettles or stovetop kettles with lids to minimize heat loss.

  4. Reuse tea leaves: After brewing tea, consider reusing the tea leaves for a second or even third infusion. This not only reduces waste but also allows you to extract more flavour from the leaves. Pro tip: if you find the second or third brew isn't strong enough, add just a small pinch of the loose leaf tea and it will boost the punch of flavour for you.

  5. Compost tea waste: Instead of throwing used tea leaves in the trash, compost them along with other organic waste. Tea leaves are rich in nutrients and can enhance the quality of your compost.

  6. Reuse tea packaging: Get creative with reusing tea packaging for other purposes. Empty tea tins or jars can be repurposed for storing spices, crafting supplies, or as planters for small herbs or succulents. Tea packages with reusable zips can be used for other food storage, or even scented bath salts - just clean out the bag first and give it a try!

Isn't it awesome that there are so many ways that you can be friendly to the earth and still enjoy your favourite tea brews!

Cheers to good tea!
